Whether or not you have an interest in history, it’s hard not to be fascinated on a guided tour of Fort Scratchley in Newcastle NSW. The volunteer guide’s passion for the history and personal connection to both the region and the military bring the tunnels to life. A great tour for kids and adults alike, the tour was not just informative but, unlike many tours, we were able to walk the tunnels where soldiers had worked and prepared for invasion, touch and move around the armaments and artillery rooms and imagine the commitment to Queen and country that inspired soldiers to a life underground and constant vigilance. The historic site has panoramic views overlooking the harbour around to Newcastle Beach and the Ocean Baths. Prices are very reasonable and our visit was memorable, interesting and much better than I expected. Book a tour, it’s well worth it. Note: The Historical Society’s website is a shocker but worth supporting – tours can be booked by phone or on site at Scratchley’s Fort.
