Go exploring or even go camping: Jump in the car and the spend the day or the whole weekend exploring various locations in and around the Nation’s Capital. You don’t even need a plan, just make it up as you go and you’ll be surprised what you might come across.

You could go to one of the very many look-out points (Black Mountain, Red Hill, Mount Ainslie) to get a good vantage point or head out of the city and drive through the countryside where you can end up enjoying places like the Cotter Dam Reserve which has a large playground and several BBQ areas. Here, you can take the Discovery Trail where you’ll learn about the history of the dam. In the warmer months you can take a dip in the crystal clear Murrumbidgee River amongst beautiful oak trees. Stop for a bevvy or bite to eat at Mount Stromlo Observatory. You could also head a bit further afield to the Tidbinbilla Space Station to get your science fix.

There are plenty of fantastic reserves in the Cotter area, with many offering great camping spots where you can enjoy some riverside rest and relaxation.
