Altona beach during kite season (December through to March) is a great spot to catch some rays and check out the kite surfers. There are between 10-60 kite surfers out at any one time on an afternoon sea breeze. A brilliant and unique colourful sight to see!

Just don't sit right next to the kites on the sand as they need room to work with when they are setting up and bringing back down in case a gust of wind picks it up unexpectedly, you don't want to be in the way and get caught up.

If you feel up to giving it a go yourself there is a kite surf school down the road. They have their lessons further down the beach to ensure newbies don't get in the way of experienced surfers.
