Fort Scratchily was such a cool place to visit when in Newcastle, not just because it’s now a museum that was once home to coastal defence, it’s also got amazing views of the coastline and is an immaculately maintained site on a hillside overlooking Newcastle city and surrounding harbour. I didn’t know it existed until I took a wrong turn. I was met at the door by retired Army veterans and some volunteers and they we’re incredibly knowledgeable and helpful as I strolled through the forts. You can also go on one of the forts guided tours but I suggest take it alone and google as you go. It’s home to 8 museums they actually let off one of their guns each day at 1pm which is super fun to see. A recommendation if you’re popping through Newcastle or surrounding suburbs on the North Coast of NSW.
