Walcha in Northern NSW has a population of around 1300 people, amazingly of which a large number are high profile Australian artists. The town has embraced it's artistic populace with an Open Air Gallery of Sculptures and Artworks. I love that this town has decided it's worthwhile spending money on Art. The sculptures are installed throughout the town - along the banks of the Apsley River, in the main street and even in the middle of a roundabout. If you're in the New England it's definitely worth a day trip to walk around and check out the sculptures, and while you're there drop into the local Art Gallery which has many works by Walcha's famous artistic sons, daughters and art-changers! The town also has a contemporary and very funky craft shop.
