Mt Stromlo Observatory is a fascinating site and is part of the Australian National University’s Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. From Mt Stromlo there are impressive views to the east over Canberra and to the west across to the Brindabella’s. There are also picnic tables and barbeques on site, and a heritage trail and associated app to guide your visit.
Mt Stromlo was severely impacted by the 2003 bushfires which it Canberra, and a number of telescopes and buildings were destroyed. The ruins of these telescopes are evocative reminders of the ferocity of the fires. There are informational boards throughout the site providing information on the research work that was conducted at Mt Stromlo before the fires and the work that continues in new facilities. A number of mountain bike riding trails also intersect at Mt Stromlo.
