Whether you’re wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of Sydney beaches, or if you’re an Illawarra local just looking to find somewhere new – you can’t go past the Coledale rock pools and ocean baths. Parking is never an issue, just find something on Northcote Street or Coledale Avenue. Then simply head down the ramp towards the beach – a great feature of Coledale’s ocean baths is that the ramp from the road and into the pool makes it wheelchair accessible. The main pool is good if you want to get in some laps, or the smaller/wading pool is excellent for kids. On quieter days my favourite is to get a spot in the wading pool and sit back and read a book or the paper – the water depth is perfect for that, and the view out to the ocean can’t be beat! If you’re looking for some food afterwards, the Coledale RSL does cheap and cheerful fish and chips (with a beer if you’re so inclined). If you’re after something a little fancier, be sure to give Chedo’s a try.
