An exhausting walk, but really worthwhile! Starting at the base of the escarpment, head to the very top of Foothills Road in Austinmer to park your car. The first part of the walk is relatively leisurely, through low lying rainforest. Pretty soon the stairs start, and then continue more or less constantly, until you reach some ladders. They might look precarious, but they’re safe enough (I’ve seen young kids climbing them with their parents!) The ladders make this part really quite fun, as you rise quite far above the tree canopy in not too much time. The path then hugs the cliff face and continues to rise, until finally you reach Sublime Point Lookout. There’s picnic areas, a café and most importantly an incredible vantage point for you to look back up and down the Illawarra coast. It might seem like you’ve walked 500km (due to the ascent), but in reality it’s a mere 700m. Oh PS – once you’ve had a chance to rest, it’s time to climb back down!
