With the beautiful summer weather, it's time to try Stand Up Paddle (SUP) boarding at St Kilda Beach.
SUP is kneeling or standing on a big foam surfboard and paddling out on the bay. It's a great workout for your core and will improve your balance. You may get wet if you fall in the 'drink'(i.e. it's best you can swim or float), but you will also enjoy the blue saltwater and sunshine. You can get private or group lessons which are a good way to start and paddle board hire is included.
The best time to try SUP is in the early morning from 7:00am as the sea is more likely to be calm, which will make it easier for you to balance. Later in the day the heat and waves intensify, and the reflection off the water increases your chances of sunburn.
What do I wear?
You can wear anything you are prepared to get wet. Most people wear their swimmers, board shorts, bikinis, gym gear, sunglasses and rash shirts. It's best to paddle with bare feet as this will give you better grip on the board, and you do wear a leg rope so you don't lose your paddle board if you do decide to go for a dip.
Parking and transport
St Kilda Beach is a very busy place on the weekends in summer and it's best to plan your transport and parking. You can catch the tram to Fitzroy Street, or Acland Street and walk around to the St Kilda Baths or the Royal Yacht Squadron Clubhouse to find the SUP van. Paid parking is available along the bay road or at St Kilda Baths (undercover) and don't be afraid to venture down to the basement for your car park.

There is so much to do in St Kilda on a beautiful summer's day. You can grab an ice cream, or drink from one of the many cafes, go for a swim or spa at St Kilda Baths, try kite surfing, flying kites along the beach, rollerblading, cycling, walking to Port Melbourne, surf skiing, sea kayaking, beach volleyball, stroll around the Sunday arts market, visit Luna Park or people watch from a cool cafe or bar.
