Lake Placid, home of a sighted large croc and no doubt many more unsighted, makes for an excellent landing spot for whitewater rafting. The whole trip takes two hours or so, and is just the right amount of scary as you cascade down the rapids. Just after the wet season (Easter) is the best time to go, as the river is at it's fullest & allows you to take your pic of routes. A bus takes you up to the hill - and you can only take the bare essentials, so leave your wallet, camera & jewellery in the hotel safe.
