the Pink Lake at Lake Hillier Western Australia looks as though someone has tipped in a load of bubblegum pink dye in to the lake.
Located on the largest island of the archipelago, Middle Island, the saline lake is bubblegum pink in colour due to the presence of a micro-algae called Halobacteria which produces carotenoids in the water.
Lake Hillier is believed to be first discovered by Europeans in 1802, by navigator Matthew Flinders, while circumnavigating Australia, who, along with shipmaster John Thistle, discovered the water’s high salt content.
Esperance is approximately 720 kilometres south-east of Perth on Western Australia's southern coastline. It is an eight hour drive or two hour flight from Perth.
